Beaumont Hospital provides Medical Image
Enabled Electronic Patient Record

IT Newssheet -
18th March 2003

Beaumont Hospital has utilised software and services from Manitex to provide a web based Medical Image enabled Electronic Patient Record. This will allow clinical staff anywhere in the Hospital, via the Hospital’s Intranet, to review available Medical Images (e.g. X-ray, Cat Scan, MRI, Nuclear Medicine) along with the results of patient tests. In line with the Hospital IT strategy the solution utilises lightweight software components based on open industry standards i.e. Browser based clients, Linux servers. The architecture of the solution allows it to operate on standard PCs over a standard Hospital Network.

The solution from Manitex is based on the NetRAAD Integrated Medical Image Management product. This has been utilised to integrate the Hospital Information System, the Diagnostic machines in the Radiology Department and the Hospital Intranet.

The following features are included:·
Integration using DICOM and HL-7 Health Informatics standards·
On-line acquisition of medical images from the diagnostic machines and storage management in the Hospital’s Image Archive. ·
On-line patient worklists for the Radiographers based on test requests entered into the Hospital Information System.·
Distribution and display of Medical Images as part of the Hospital’s Electronic Patient Record across the Hospital’s standard network.

IT manager Tony Kenny commented “The NetRAAD solution fitted perfectly with our technology infrastructure and has enabled us to implement a state-of-the-art facility at a fraction of the cost of equivalent offerings. It allows us to make important clinical information easily available to doctors and nurses directly to their workplace assisting them in providing a more efficient and responsive service to the Hospital’s patients. As a by product we have created along term Image Archive and built up valuable experience in the DICOM standard that will provide the ideal foundation for a PACS implementation when the Hospital and Radiology Department are ready for this”.

Expansion Plans:
The system is currently installed in pilot mode making images available from X-Ray, Cat Scan, MRI and Nuclear Medicine. The solution will be expanded to include all diagnostic modalities and will be made available to more users across the Hospital in the coming months.

A sister product EndoRAAD is also being implemented by Manitex in the Hospital’s Endoscopic Unit which supports the department’s workflow and allows the doctors real time capture of video and still images from Endoscopic procedures. These images will also be made available across the Hospital via NetRAAD.
